A long time ago I noticed something that made me stop wasting my money on most magazines. Especially women's magazines. Every cover ever printed has the same issues in bold print, just worded differently. There's always lose weight, get beautiful, men, sex, love. What is the message women get from these magazines? Lose weight and be beautiful and then you'll have men who will love you and want to have sex with you? Like the only important thing in life is snagging a man and the only way to do that is to be physically attractive. Who cares about what's in your head and heart and who you actually are as a person right? And there are hundreds of these magazines and millions of women reading them.

These are the important issues in our lives? What about helping others, finding your inner strength, being a good person, politics, diversity that makes us unique and beautiful, our children, our parents, being a good friend, discrimination, music, literature, our struggles and our strength? I'm the last person to get sappy, but at the risk of sounding sappy I have to say that there is so much more to a woman's life than men, sex, physical beauty and losing weight, SO much more. The focus is all wrong. Yet it diverts millions of women every day into thinking this is the focus.

It's sad to me that so many magazines sell so many billions of dollars in revenue feeding people the same shallow crap over and over. No wonder it's programmed into our heads, not to mention other forms of media. Why do some many people buy into it? I know there have got to be some psychological reasons behind it and I know it can be changed. But what's it going to take and when is it going to happen? In some ways, we've come so far as a civilized society, but it some ways we've only gone backwards. Determining a person's worth by their physical appearance is no different than treating people like animals. But then again, most animals have it better than humans.
